Why are Donor Samples Held in Quarantine for Six Months?

Our sperm donors are well screened and tested for infectious diseases before entering our program and continue to be tested on a regular basis while actively donating. Specifically, we are screening donors for Zika, hepatitis B/C, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, HTLV I/II, and West Nile virus, among other diseases. In addition, we perform overall health screenings on donors that include physicals, complete blood counts, and metabolic panels. With so many precautions in place to ensure we are using safe and healthy donors, why do we then hold semen samples in quarantine for six months?

As a licensed tissue bank, SSB is required to follow all safety guidelines and recommendations set by the FDA and state-level agencies where applicable. The FDA requires our donors to be tested for infectious disease, then re-tested in six months before samples are released to be used by clients. This is because some diseases, such as HIV, can take up to six months to show positive in a blood test. The quarantine period allows us to hold on to samples to ensure they are clear of infectious agents, which protects intended parents. It also allows us to continue to provide safe and high-quality vials to help you start your family.

If you have any questions about donor screening requirements or vial quality, we are happy to help. You can reach us via email or by calling (206) 588-1484.
